Core areas of the National Park

Upper Kiskunság Steppes

Upper Kiskunság Steppes

Located in the former floodplain of the Danube River, this area is the second largest saline steppe of the Hungarian Great Plain; its total area is 11,000 ha. This formerly water-logged area has been drained, and the high evaporation rate and the high salt content of the groundwater enhanced salinization. Presently the landscape is dominated by alkaline carbonate-rich steppes, saline meadows, pastures, playas and, embedded among these, ridges formed by sandy-loessy wind-blown deposits.

Plant specialities: Sea Aster, Lepidium crassifolium and Siberian Statice
Animal specialities: Dorcadion fulvum subsp. cervae, Collared Pratincole, Red-footed Falcon and Great Bustard
